what are your thoughts on obamacare? [laughter] too many questions. i had to ask you three. >> i may need a couple hours. it is unraveling on its own effects. i was telling jonathan that i think it is not that government is inherently stupid, although that is a debatable point. [laughter] it is that they do not get the right incentives. the business would be run this way because you would be run out of business immediately. we have put into law perverse incentives. people who had cheap insurance no longer can buy that. it is what they could afford and that is the only way they had it. i was one of them. i used to have family coverage for five people, for $5,000. a $5,000 deductible. in obamacare, you can have a higher detectable and still pay $20,000 because there is a mandate built into it. the problem is the insurance company is never going to offer those policies again because they are told within a year, if you delay it for year, then in a year everyone will be forced to buy the new policies, which are more expensive. let's say you sell bread and

the questions regarding enrollment and implementation of obamacare has to do with a long- standing observation and a plan around it that we need young people to enroll. oft is true regardless the affordable care act. it was always going to be true. it was always going to be important. it was always the case, as i think we have discussed here in this room. younger people are more likely to wait to later stages of the enrollment process to enroll. this is part of a broader effort that we will be undertaking to make sure that americans around the country understand the advantages of having insurance and the need to have it and all of the options available to them. i will leave it to folks on the political side who have looked at that. we are in pretty stark disagreement with some of the polls, particularly on youth and the afford will care act. there are good polls and apples. -- and bad polls. debate?ere a fear of basically, the percentage of americans who want to repeal the affordable care act has not changed at all. i think that speaks to the kind of entrenched political nature of this debate

you said you think that obamacare is bad and the implementation of the common core is far worse. who is to blame and anyone stepping up to fix this? >> i am not a big believer in blame. i am a union leader and i could easily say, this one, this one, this one. if we are not rolling up our sleeves and actually engaging, then we are in the same debate over who cares about kids. i care about kids, no, i care about kids. that is a debate we are having. let me just say, this is what i think is happened. we do education policy by press release. i think the governors and the state chiefs will write about saying, let's figure out a set of standards that are aligned to what kids need to know about the global economy. they move pretty fast about it. we were engaged with them and brought a lot of teachers who critiqued the materials and things like that. that is what matters. the public was not involved, parents were not involved, districts were not involved. it felt like, because of the speed at which it went, and because the federal government incentivized through the race to the top -- it

obamacare isn't an isolated case. it may be the most obvious example of this administration's determination to advance its agenda by any means possible, but it's one example of many. the latest example was the administration's complicity in the power grab we saw last month in the senate. news reports suggest that the president who denounced this tactic when republicans thought about it back in 2005 was actively lobbying for it ahead of the majority leader's fateful decision to pull the trigger. so the president and the majority leader were for the protection of minority rights in the senate until they were no longer in the minority. at that point, minority rights, the rules of the senate and the principle of a meaningful check on the executive branch became an inconvenience, an inconvenience that stood in the way of their desire for more power. as i indicated last month, this was a pure power grab, plain and simple. if the majority party can't be expected to follow the rules, then there aren't any rules. so this was a

on your first question about obamacare, the best thing that happened to obamacare was the government shutdown. if not we would have known from day one that it was a debacle. i remember asking a guy who is defending it to help define the website, et cetera, about two and a half weeks in when we finally started talking about obamacare and the website and all the different problems, well, they were calling it glitches, remember at the getting they were glitches? i said when can i start calling these glitches a debacle? and he said, about the middle of november if the website is a fix. today is november 19. it is a gigantic debacle. you know, so many different aspects. because it's not just a website. and by the way, it's incredible that the greatest country in the world have spent hundreds of millions of dollars building a website and the thing doesn't work. that is not, you know, i'm tired of hearing excuses about it because i'm tired of hearing it's going to work by such a date and it's working that and is going to work by november 30. in all likelihood it's not. but there's more than
